Perhaps the most important ‘knowledge’ I need to enjoy and be moved by the Mir? is the knowledge that a non-representational painting can be a valid work of art and can evoke such a response. Perhaps fearful of an egomaniac architect, most have so far opted for a conversion - which implies Bankside power station. I hope they go for a brand new building, not least because this brick-built bunker would keep the brickie jokes flying. Perhaps the book could be re-written as a collaboration between a digital visual artist, a digital audio artist, an electronic writer and a programmer (and probably others). Perhaps we should wait ten years for younger hybrid “artists” with a more mature “language” than the one we are currently trying to twist to suit a culture that is currently obscured by past arts.

Perhaps due to the exchange rate between the franc and the dollar, many works by American artists were more expensive than those by their European contemporaries. A great number of the American works were also loaned with no intention of sales—Marin’s Woolworth Building Series was listed as not for sale (Brown, Story 290). Perhaps there is a larger market of potential buyers. But at the moment it looks like, aside from those at the top end of the market who are generally immune to financial market troubles, there are fewer buyers actually buying, not more. Personally, I do not share this notion that the idea is more important than the object (the painting or sculpture?itself).

MoMA is one of the first non-university cultural institutions to be featured in iTunesU, Apple’s educational section of the iTunes application. Since the MoMA-branded channel’s launch last October, more than 100,000 audio and video tracks have been downloaded. MOMA strives to condense each phase of modernism into something comprehensible. The “all one color” paintings that some dislike so intensely are marvelous to the eye of a painter.
