Entrepreneurship is a long, difficult word. And like the word, the reality of the concept involves many differing viewpoints and definitions. Entrepreneurship is the vehicle for creating new jobs, generating revenue, advancing innovation, enhancing productivity, and improving business models and processes. Despite the challenges, entrepreneurship has never before been more vital to our economy than it is today. Entrepreneurship is seen both as a voluntary action on behalf of an individual, and as a collective operating model for an organization. There is also internal entrepreneurship that arises from dialogue between the individual and the organization.
Social entrepreneurs have social change as their primary goal, with profitability as a stepping stone towards that goal. Social enterprises specifically address conventional competitive markets, but elsewhere social entrepreneurship broadens the conception of a ?market? Thus, market orientation here includes ideas of reciprocity and the common good as well as the rational, utility maximising individual. Social entrepreneurs have the same core temperament as their business entrepreneur peers but use their talents to solve global social problems, such as why children are not learning, and why available technology is not widely used.
Students develop innovative solutions to a wide range of problems that arise in the process of pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. Attention is devoted to the need for creative approaches to opportunity identification and business concept formulation when developing new products, services, and processes. Students interact with local, national, and international cooperating organizations engaged in various entrepreneurial activities. Throughout their programme of study, students work hand-in-hand with external firms on existing business-generated opportunities (“sharp ideas”) to develop them into successful entrepreneurial business activities. Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) hosts a variety of hands-on activities that contribute to your entrepreneurial growth. The Entrepreneurship Society hosts functions and guest speakers that put you face-to-face with potential employers and allow you to learn about the variety of entrepreneurial opportunities.
